The Crapola Story (G-Rated Version)

The story of Crapola began innocently enough, out in the fields of produce that my wife and I were weeding just a few summers ago.  It was then, during our apprenticeships at organic farms that we came to understand and fully appreciate exactly how food gets from the field to the table.  We realized what many have known for awhile - farming is hard work!  We also learned that organic farming is the best way to manage cropland - it will improve the health and fertility of soil over time.  Not only that, but the food is often better tasting and more nutritious.  That's the reason we use as many organic ingredients in Crapola as we can.

In June of 2007, we started a little hobby.  One day I said something like "wouldn't it be funny if we made cranberry apple granola and called it Crapola?".  I say lots of things like that, but for some reason this idea actually became a reality.  Next thing I knew, a business was born.

Be careful what you say in front of your wife.  It could change your life forever.

We searched far and wide for granola recipes, assembled huge quantities of various ingredients, and got busy.  To add to the charm of our little enterprise, the first six sample batches were baked in our wood-fired cookstove.  We gathered friends together and sampled the test batches, judging each variety and making notes.  At the end of the night, we had a great party.  But there was a long line for the bathroom.

Eleven test batches later, we came up with the ultimate recipe.  We made Crapola in a borrowed kitchen, and sold it at the Ely Farmer's Market.  The response was pretty amazing.  We heard things like "This is the best granola I've ever had" and "this tastes so fresh" and "I bet even horses would like this stuff".  Our product was highly praised and in demand.  Crapola would even go on to be mentioned by Jay Leno on the Tonight Show (10/29/07 episode), just four months after its inception.  We knew we were on to something.  Even our dog likes it....

What makes Crapola so good?  We have no secrets: the best ingredients make the best granola.   We set out to make our granola as good as we possibly could.  We invite you to be the judge.
